Pack for the longest stretch between reliable laundry and the activities on your route. Do not assume summer clothes will dry overnight or that every hotel provides a working dryer.
Build the clothing plan around washing and drying
Choose breathable items that are comfortable for your own skin and activities, plus a layer for strongly cooled interiors or changing weather. Bring enough underwear and socks for the actual gap between laundry opportunities. A two-outfit rule does not fit every trip.
Confirm whether the hotel offers guest machines, a dryer, a paid service or only an external laundry arrangement. Humidity, ventilation and fabric change drying time. Read the laundry guide before scheduling washing just before a train move.
Plan for the actual weather exposure
A compact rain option, sun protection and comfortable worn-in shoes can be useful for city and outdoor days. Check the forecast and activity conditions rather than carrying a rigid nationwide summer kit. Mountain and plateau visits may need equipment or layers not required downtown.
Make room for rest and indoor alternatives during heat or severe weather. For medical conditions, medication or sun/heat sensitivity, get personal advice before travel; a packing list is not a treatment plan.
Keep essentials accessible and protected
- Original passport and the entry documents relevant to the journey.
- Offline hotel addresses, booking confirmations and emergency contacts.
- Medication in its original packaging with the appropriate documentation.
- Phone, charging equipment and a payment backup.
- Small hygiene supplies and a suitable snack where needed.
Keep sensitive copies securely and separately from the original documents. Do not put everything in a checked bag or on a single phone. Use the medication guide for ingredient and import checks.
Check the charger and the power bank separately
Read each charger’s input label and the manufacturer’s instructions. A plug adapter changes the connection; it does not automatically change voltage. Do not cut grounding pins or force a plug into an incompatible socket. See the adapter guide.
For mainland domestic flights, CAAC’s rule prohibits power banks without a clear CCC mark and those in recalled models/batches. Other capacity and airline restrictions still apply. Check the actual device before travel using the flight power-bank guide; a small-looking battery is not automatically compliant.
Leave space instead of packing for every imaginary emergency
Do not assume toiletries, sizes or specialist products will always be easy to replace in an unfamiliar neighborhood. Carry the items you personally rely on, then avoid duplicate bulky items that the confirmed hotel or activity already provides.
Secure your phone before the trip and test account recovery, data and translation tools. Connectivity that fails on arrival cannot be repaired by an extra shirt. Keep the app preparation checklist separate from the luggage list.
For the phone setup that belongs alongside your packing list, use our free China travel resources for connectivity, payments and local transport preparation. Save the useful details before departure so the checklist is still available without a working connection.
One day before travel
Check the latest weather at every base, laundry access, luggage allowances and the first-night arrival details. Remove items that conflict with flight or rail restrictions. Put passport, required medicines, chargers and the first-day file where you can reach them without unpacking the entire bag.
Turn this decision into a workable route
Packing works best when the route specifies the walking days, hotel moves and laundry opportunities. LOCLYX is a China-based local team. We tailor a written plan to your dates, budget, interests, pace and constraints. Planning costs $19.9 per travel day; travel purchases are separate and we do not make reservations or provide ground services.
