4:00 AM

Flag Raising Ceremony at Tiananmen Square

Enter through Gate 2 or 3 to see the honor guard march alongside the flag-raising. Gate 3 security: Tiananmen East Station Exit D. For a taxi, ask for the East Gate of Zishutang and cross the underpass. Gate 2 security: Tiananmen East Station Exit B.

💡 Local tip: Skip the early-morning makeup routine — use that time for extra sleep instead. After the ceremony, head back to your hotel to freshen up, then return to Tiananmen Square for photos.
5:00 AM

Tiananmen Square Photos

Walk around the square and snap photos after the ceremony. Note: The Rostrum (Gate of Heavenly Peace) is currently under maintenance, 5:00 AM–10:00 PM, temporarily closed to visitors.

🚖 5 min by taxi · 🚶 10–15 min walk · 🚲 bike share to next stop
Lunch

Siji Minfu Roast Duck (Forbidden City branch)

One of Beijing’s most celebrated roast duck restaurants — the undisputed choice for Peking duck. But be warned: the queues are legendary, especially during holidays. Walk-in wait times can stretch for hours.

💡 Local hack: Open Meituan at opening time and join the digital queue from your phone. Time it right and you’ll barely wait. But plan carefully — each phone number can only book once per day, and if you miss your slot, you can’t rebook.

Must-order sides: Beyond the duck, their Beijing zhajiangmian — thick, chewy hand-pulled noodles with fermented soybean paste — is outstanding. Do not skip it.

Afternoon

The Forbidden City (Palace Museum)

⏰ 8:30 AM–5:00 PM · Morning entry cutoff: 12:00 PM · Afternoon earliest entry: 11:00 AM

Route: Meridian Gate → Gate of Supreme Harmony → Hall of Supreme Harmony → Hall of Central Harmony → Hall of Preserving Harmony → Palace of Heavenly Purity → Clock Gallery → Treasure Gallery → Palace of Earthly Tranquility → Imperial Garden → Gate of Divine Prowess

⏱ ~3 hours. If visiting the morning session, arrive early — the crowds are real.

💡 Secret Fast-Track Entrance: Take Tiananmen East Station Exit B. Walk straight ~100m, turn left into Nanchizi Street. Continue ~400m. On your right you’ll see the Hanting Hotel — across from it, there’s a small alley. Walk in, follow to the red gate of Beijing Cultural Palace. Buy entry (¥2), follow signs turning right — you’ll come out right at the Forbidden City gates, skipping the main queue entirely.
Afternoon 2

Jingshan Park

⏰ 6:30 AM–9:00 PM

Exit the Forbidden City through the Gate of Divine Prowess — Jingshan Park is right across the street. The climb is gentle, not strenuous at all. From the summit pavilion, you get the classic panoramic view of the entire Forbidden City — the postcard shot everyone wants.

💡 Quickest route up: Enter through the west gate, turn right, take the first path up on your left. Summit in ~10 minutes.
🚖 Taxi · 🚲 bike share to Nanluoguxiang
Evening

Nanluoguxiang & Gulou (Drum Tower)

A classic Beijing hutong alley turned vibrant food and nightlife street. Stunning at night with lanterns, crowd energy, and endless snack stalls. Perfect for a slow evening wander.

🍦 Wuyutai Ice Cream

The ice cream here is incredible — you have to try it.

🥤 Yin San Douzhi

A deeply authentic Beijing douzhi (fermented mung bean drink) shop. Travelers, give it a try — it’s a genuine local experience. (Full disclosure: our writer genuinely cannot stomach douzhi. Your mileage may vary.)

🍰 Fuhuazhai Pastry Shop

Beijing’s imperial-style afternoon tea, in the evening. Must-orders: Yundou Juan (kidney bean rolls) and Rose Chestnut Crisp — these two are absolutely non-negotiable. The rest: follow your instincts.

🦀 Crab Roe Soup Dumplings

An enormous soup dumpling, packed with rich, savory broth — fresh, delicious, and deeply satisfying. A perfect way to wrap up your day.

🍽 Dinner — end your day here.
