Short answer: Luggage delivery in China is possible, but there is no single nationwide hotel-forwarding system that works exactly like Japan’s takkyubin network. Depending on your route, you may be able to use China Railway’s “Travel Light” service, arrange a domestic courier shipment, or ask a hotel whether it can help coordinate pickup. Confirm acceptance, timing and the destination handover before sending anything—and keep your passport, medication, valuables and next-day essentials with you.
Evidence checked: September 7, 2026. The railway-service details below use a July 2025 government report based on information from China State Railway Group. That report is a verified service snapshot, not a promise that the same stations, booking windows or prices apply today. Check the live 12306 app or WeChat mini-program for your actual train and station.

Do not confuse forwarding with same-day storage
| Situation | Useful next step | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel or courier forwarding | Confirm collection, recipient hotel and expected delivery window. | A hotel’s willingness to help is not nationwide service coverage. |
| Railway luggage service | Check the actual stations, scope and handover rules. | Station-based handling is not automatically hotel-to-hotel delivery. |
| A tight next departure | Keep essential items and a change of clothes with you. | Do not forward anything required before delivery is confirmed. |
Key Takeaways
- China has luggage-moving options, but ordinary storage, railway assistance and commercial courier delivery are different services.
- China Railway’s “Travel Light” service was introduced at selected stations with door-to-station and station-to-door options; live coverage must be checked before relying on it.
- The verified railway service is not the same as a universal hotel-to-hotel delivery network.
- A hotel may help communicate with a courier, but hotel participation, storage space and receiving procedures vary.
- Never forward your passport, medication, cash, bank cards, critical electronics or anything required within the next 24–48 hours.
- Allow a buffer and keep photos, a plain-language contents list, pickup evidence and tracking information.
- If the next hotel has not agreed to receive and hold the bag, do not send it there.
Can Hotels Send Luggage to Another Hotel in China?
Sometimes, but do not treat it as a standard hotel amenity. A front desk may be willing to help call a courier, print or complete a waybill, explain the pickup location or hold the suitcase until collection. Another hotel may accept and store an incoming shipment for a registered guest. Either hotel can also decline, impose a time limit or require a specific name and booking record.
Contact both properties before checkout. Ask the sending hotel whether staff will hand the bag to the courier after you leave. Ask the receiving hotel whether it will accept a suitcase before your arrival, which guest name and booking number should identify it, and how long it will hold the item. Save those answers. A courier order is not useful if the destination desk refuses the package.
Which Three Services Do Travelers Commonly Confuse?
Storage, railway luggage assistance and commercial shipping solve three different problems. Choose by where the bag needs to end up, not by whichever English label sounds closest.
- Luggage storage: the bag stays at a hotel, station, airport or locker while you explore locally.
- Railway “Travel Light”: the verified service connects a pickup or delivery address with a participating railway station under the current booking conditions.
- Commercial courier: an independent domestic shipment moves between accepted addresses and follows the courier’s own packaging, identity, contents, price and timing rules.
If you only need to leave a bag for several hours, use our guide to luggage storage at China train stations, airports and city locations. Shipping a suitcase across cities creates more handovers and more ways for timing to fail.
What Is China Railway’s “Travel Light” Service?
It is a luggage-carrying service linked to selected railway stations and passenger journeys. A July 2025 Shanghai government report, citing China State Railway Group, described two forms: “door-to-station” and “station-to-door.” Passengers could access the service through the 12306 app or a WeChat mini-program.
- Door-to-station: luggage was collected from a designated location within 35 km of the station and delivered to a station locker or the platform.
- Station-to-door: luggage was collected from the platform or a station locker after arrival and delivered to an address within 35 km of the station.
The same report listed booking windows of 48 hours to four hours before departure for door-to-station, and 24 hours to one hour before arrival for station-to-door. It reported baseline prices of RMB 68 per piece for station-side handling and RMB 98 for platform-side handling, while explicitly noting that prices could vary with demand and operating costs.
Those are historical published terms, not a quote for your trip. Station coverage has changed since the initial rollout, and a station name appearing in an old list does not prove availability for every train, date, address or passenger. Search the current 12306 service entry and verify the displayed order terms before planning around it.
Is “Travel Light” a Hotel-to-Hotel Service?
Not in the same sense as a general intercity hotel-forwarding network. The verified railway description covers door-to-station and station-to-door movement around a rail journey. It does not establish a universal service that collects a suitcase from any hotel in one city and independently delivers it to any hotel in another city without reference to participating stations and live order conditions.
It may still remove the hardest parts of a train day: moving a heavy suitcase from your hotel to the departure station, carrying it through the terminal, or taking it from the arrival station to the next address. Check which handover point the order actually promises. “To the station,” “to a locker,” “to the platform” and “to an address” are not interchangeable.
How Does Commercial Courier Delivery Differ?
A commercial courier handles the suitcase as a domestic shipment rather than railway passenger luggage. The sender and recipient addresses, accepted contents, packaging, declared value, identity information, price, tracking and delivery estimate follow that courier’s current rules. The bag may travel through a logistics network completely separate from your train.
Before booking, confirm whether the courier accepts a suitcase without a box or protective wrap, whether the pickup agent can communicate with the hotel, which identification is required from a foreign sender, and whether the receiving hotel can sign for it. Use the courier’s current official channel for the quote and restrictions; do not copy a price or delivery time from another traveler’s route.

What Should Never Go Inside a Forwarded Suitcase?
Keep anything irreplaceable, urgent, valuable or identity-sensitive with you. A tracked bag can still be delayed, held for clarification, damaged or delivered when the receiving desk cannot match it to your stay.
- Passport, visa documents and residence or entry records.
- Prescription medication and medical devices needed during the next several days.
- Cash, bank cards, keys and irreplaceable documents.
- Laptop, camera, external drives and other fragile or valuable electronics.
- Power banks, batteries, liquids, aerosols or other items that may be restricted by the chosen transport service.
- Clothing and toiletries required before the delivery buffer expires.
- One-of-a-kind souvenirs or anything you cannot document and replace.
Rail carry-on rules and courier restrictions are not the same. If you are deciding what stays with you on the train, check our China high-speed train luggage rules before transferring items between bags.
How Should You Coordinate Checkout, Train Travel and Check-In?
Plan the bag as a separate traveler with its own confirmed route and buffer. Do not send it minutes before you leave and assume someone else will solve every handover.
- Confirm the receiving hotel booking and obtain the exact delivery name and address.
- Ask the destination hotel to accept and hold the bag before placing the order.
- Check the live service area, pickup window, estimated delivery range and contents restrictions.
- Photograph the closed suitcase and its condition without exposing personal data.
- Use an internal contact card or identifier that follows the service’s instructions, but do not display sensitive information unnecessarily.
- Keep the pickup receipt or order record and tracking access offline.
- Tell the destination hotel the expected arrival window and tracking reference through a secure channel.
- Carry enough clothing, medication and charging equipment to survive a delay.
If your railway booking uses a foreign passport, keep the passenger record separate from the luggage order. Our 12306 foreign passport guide explains the identity details needed for the actual passenger ticket and station entry.
When Is Sending Luggage a Bad Idea?
Do not forward the bag when your itinerary has no recovery time. A one-night stop, an early international departure, an unconfirmed hotel, a remote destination or a same-day essential item can turn a convenience into a bigger problem.
- Your next stay is only one night.
- The hotel has not agreed to receive deliveries.
- You are changing accommodation again before the expected arrival window.
- The suitcase contains medication, documents or equipment you need immediately.
- The route includes an island, rural area or address the service has not confirmed.
- You cannot access tracking or communicate with either handover point.
- A delay would threaten an international flight, cruise or fixed departure.
What If the Bag Arrives Late?
Use the official tracking record first, then contact the sender, carrier and receiver in that order. Confirm whether the bag was actually collected, whether it is moving, and whether the destination attempted delivery under a different name or at a different desk. Do not create duplicate delivery requests for the same bag unless the carrier instructs you to do so.
Keep the next hotel informed if your checkout date is approaching. If the itinerary itself needs to change, protect the next non-refundable commitment and avoid adding another city just to chase the suitcase. Our guide to common China itinerary mistakes explains why stacked same-day transfers make recovery harder.
Luggage Delivery Checklist
- Correct sender and receiver names.
- Exact pickup and delivery addresses in the format accepted by the service.
- Receiving hotel approval.
- Current quote, accepted contents and estimated delivery range.
- Pickup window that does not conflict with checkout or train departure.
- Photos of the closed suitcase and its condition.
- Tracking record and contact channel saved offline.
- At least one full change of clothes and all essentials kept with you.
Bottom Line
You can send luggage ahead in China, but the safe method depends on the route. Railway “Travel Light” can simplify selected station journeys; a commercial courier can handle a separate domestic shipment; and a hotel may help with the handover. None of those options is automatically available everywhere. Confirm both ends, build in time, and keep the things that can ruin your trip in your own bag.
