China’s 240-hour visa-free transit policy can support a short mainland visit on a qualifying route to a third country or region. It is not a general ten-day tourist visa. Check nationality, travel documents, designated ports, confirmed onward transport and permitted destinations together.
The NIA’s August 20, 2026 guidance lists 57 eligible countries, 65 designated ports and 24 provincial-level regions. Always use the current official list for your own journey. Eligibility on paper does not guarantee an individual admission decision.
Five checks before buying tickets

Test the immediate journey before and after mainland China
Illustrative route comparisons: U.S. → Shanghai → Japan and Hong Kong → Shenzhen → Thailand can satisfy the third-country/region pattern, subject to the other conditions. U.S. → Shanghai → U.S. and Hong Kong → Shenzhen → Hong Kong do not satisfy that pattern.
Japan → mainland China → U.S. is not disqualified merely because the traveler is returning home. The immediate origin and onward destination are different. Conversely, an extra stop elsewhere in your overall holiday does not fix a mainland leg whose immediate origin and destination are the same.
Do not turn a routing example into a booking instruction. Confirm the actual operating itinerary, transit airports, border ports and onward documents before paying.
Check the permitted area before adding cities
The policy allows travel within designated areas and can support eligible cross-region journeys. It does not mean unrestricted access to the whole country. Older 72-hour and 144-hour area descriptions can also be misleading when applied to the newer policy.
Write the exact entry port, planned mainland cities, transfer stations and exit port in one list. Check each against current NIA or port guidance. If one destination or transfer is outside the permitted area, change the route or use another valid entry basis. Do not rely on a loosely labeled provincial map or a social-media itinerary.
Use the deadline immigration gives you
Confirm the permitted exit date and time when admitted and keep the record. Do not add travel days using an unofficial arrival-time calculator or assume that a “ten-day” headline means ten extra nights. Plan departure comfortably before the official deadline, allowing for cancellations and disruptions.
The NIA identifies permitted purposes such as tourism, business and visiting relatives or friends. Work, study and news coverage require the appropriate approval or visa arrangements. Transit entry is not a substitute for those permissions.
Can you enter from Hong Kong by train?
West Kowloon Station Port was added in November 2025. A qualifying rail arrival is therefore possible, but the train ticket alone is not the qualification. Allow time for the station’s immigration process and retain the onward ticket required by your mainland entry basis.

Carry a coherent evidence set
- Original travel document and confirmation of the applicable policy.
- Confirmed onward transport with date, seat and booking reference.
- First-night accommodation details and a truthful outline of the permitted mainland route.
- Offline copies of key confirmations; a phone screenshot does not replace an original travel document.
- Official arrival information where required, with paper or port alternatives if the online route fails.
When a visa is the more suitable route
Consider a visa when the journey is a mainland round trip, your passport is ineligible, you need a longer stay or multiple mainland entries, your destination is outside the permitted area, or the purpose is not covered. Check the responsible embassy or consulate for your circumstances. Do not buy a complicated transit itinerary solely to avoid an application without comparing the extra fare, time and risk.
