A Kashgar visit needs more preparation than adding another familiar city stop. Check current official travel advice, destination access, transport and cultural-site instructions before committing to the route.
Kashgar old city: plan one public neighborhood block
Use Kashgar old city / 喀什古城 as the anchor for a visit focused on streets, food and a specific craft interest. A 2024 Xinhua photo report shows leather goods, copperwork and food in the old-city visitor setting. It is evidence of the area’s character at that date, not proof that a named shop or performance will operate during your trip.
| Part of the block | Planning allowance | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Orient at a confirmed public visitor entrance | 20–30 minutes | Current visitor route, opening and any identification instructions |
| One public street-and-craft loop | 60–90 minutes | Choose leather, copperwork or another actual shop interest; ask about photographs |
| Seated meal, bread or tea stop | 45–60 minutes | Current menu, ingredients, seating and payment |
| Return to the agreed pickup point | 30 minutes of flexibility | Use an accessible public location, not a narrow residential lane |
This gives roughly two-and-a-half to three-and-a-half hours on the ground, excluding your hotel journey. These are planning allowances, not measured walking times or a guided product. Choose one compact loop; a residential doorway or a family celebration is not a visitor attraction simply because it is visible from a lane.
Save Chinese place names and confirm the day’s route
Keep 喀什古城 as the area name and agree on the specific entrance and return point with your hotel or current visitor service. For Id Kah Mosque / 艾提尕尔清真寺, use the actual venue’s current visitor instructions. An exterior stop and admission to a religious space are different decisions; this route does not promise interior access.
Markets and performances are separate checks
Do not turn the word “Sunday” into a guaranteed livestock-market appointment. Confirm the exact market, location, operating day and visitor access through a current local source before arranging the trip. If you cannot confirm those details, keep the old-city public block instead. Likewise, do not plan around an assumed daily opening ceremony or promise a private home visit.
Heat, spending and access
Use an illustrative RMB 100–180 per adult allowance for a simple meal, tea or snacks and local transport while checking actual choices. This is a budgeting input, not a Kashgar price survey. Shopping, a guide, out-of-town transport and admission to any separately ticketed venue are additional. Price a craft purchase on its actual materials and terms; no purchase is required to observe a public visitor street.
Shorten the exposed walk in strong sun or heat, keep water and a confirmed seated stop, and use actual opening times when choosing the start. If weather or visitor access makes the outdoor block unsuitable, use a confirmed indoor venue or rest period rather than inventing an open museum. Ask about the exact surfaces and entrance if step-free access matters.
Fit Kashgar into the wider route before buying transport
Check your own government’s current national and Xinjiang-specific advice and confirm destination access for your nationality and intended places. Neither a blanket “all Xinjiang needs a permit” statement nor a promise of unrestricted access is a useful itinerary check. Religious-site dress and photography instructions apply to the place you actually visit; ask before photographing people.
Fit this block into the wider route
Do not attach a remote outing to the afternoon simply because it shares the Kashgar name. Give onward journeys their own transport and access checks. Use the travel-safety framework, the city shortlist and the route-planning hub to decide whether the extra travel fits.
