How to Order Food in China Without Speaking Chinese

GUIDES / JOURNALS 2026

You can order many meals with pictures, a few prepared phrases and staff help. Start by understanding the menu and price; a QR code is one ordering method, not a guarantee of English, payment acceptance or allergy safety.

A QR code on a Chinese restaurant table linking to a photo-rich ordering system on a smartphone — the standard way to order food in China in 2026.
What you seeNext step
A table QR codeAsk which app opens it and whether it is ordering, payment or a membership link.
A paper or wall menuUse the dish name, picture and price together; ask staff to confirm the item.
A display counterPoint to the item, then confirm portion, price and whether it is ready to eat.
An app that will not loadAsk for staff-assisted ordering or a paper/photo menu rather than installing an unknown app.

English menus, photographs and app registration differ by venue. Some QR menus require network access or phone verification. A translated dish name may be incomplete; photograph the original text so staff can see what you mean.

Confirm the order before submitting

  1. Check whether the price is per portion, per person, per weight or for a set.
  2. Ask how many people a dish serves and whether rice or other extras are separate.
  3. Confirm important ingredients and dietary needs with staff before adding a dish.
  4. Check the cart and whether the order has actually been submitted to the kitchen.
  5. Ask whether payment is now, after the meal or through a separate cashier.
  6. Keep the receipt or order record if there is a problem.

Adding a dish to a cart does not always place an order. Paying does not always send it either. Ask staff if the workflow is unclear, especially when several people are ordering through one table code.

Use photos as a communication aid

Save a few dish names and restaurant addresses before the day starts. A photo can communicate the item you want, but a restaurant’s recipe may differ from the picture you found elsewhere. Ask rather than assuming all egg fried rice, dumplings or tofu dishes have identical ingredients.

Translation tools can help with ordinary menu browsing. Their accuracy is not a fixed percentage and their offline features depend on the device and downloaded language pack. Test the exact tool before relying on it without data.

A small request card for staff

English requestChinese to show
Could I see a menu with pictures?请问有带图片的菜单吗?
I would like this dish.我要这道菜。
How much is this portion?这一份多少钱?
Please make it not spicy.请不要放辣椒。
Could we have the bill?请结账。

“Not spicy” is a preference, not an allergy statement. “Vegetarian” alone may not explain that meat stock, fish sauce or animal fat is unsuitable. Have a precise restriction card checked before travel.

Pictures do not establish ingredient safety

Mapo tofu can contain minced meat; a vegetable dish can use meat stock; dumplings can contain meat or seafood; sauces can contain wheat, nuts or other allergens. None is a universal “safe bet.” Ingredient questions and cross-contact questions are separate.

For allergies, use the allergy-specific guide and prepare with your clinician. If staff cannot confirm what matters for your restriction, choose a different meal. Politeness is never a reason to eat something unsafe.

Keep a meal backup near the day’s route

Choose a nearby alternative and keep a permitted snack suitable for your needs. A long queue, older vendor or English sign does not establish food hygiene. Look for safe handling and freshly prepared food, and use current health guidance for your circumstances.

A late train arrival is not the moment to begin searching for a suitable restaurant across the city. Connect meal choices with the hotel and sightseeing route, leaving time for a change if a venue is closed.

Ordering and etiquette are different tasks

Ask how shared dishes, serving utensils and the bill work at this venue. You do not need to memorize rigid cultural rules to enjoy a meal. See the dining-etiquette guide and the tipping guide for those questions.

Prepare drinks as well as meals

  • Drinking water — Prepare water choices and refill plans for your travel day.

Turn this decision into a workable route

Meal choices need to match the neighborhood, timing, budget and the traveler’s actual restrictions. LOCLYX is a China-based local team. We tailor a written plan to your dates, budget, interests, pace and constraints. Planning costs $19.9 per travel day; travel purchases are separate and we do not make reservations or provide ground services.

A written route can include restaurant choices and alternatives; it cannot certify that a kitchen is allergen-free. Compare the sample itinerary and pricing and scope before using Plan My Trip. Delivery and revision conditions are in the published policy.
