GUIDES / JOURNALS 2026

A useful China budget starts with your dates, traveler count, room arrangement and city order. A single daily average hides flights, hotel nights and transfer days; use a line-item worksheet before deciding the trip is affordable.

Decide what each number is paying for

Accommodation is usually priced per room per night; rail seats and flights are generally per passenger per leg; meals and many admissions are per person. A ten-day trip is not automatically ten hotel nights. Count the nights in the actual itinerary, including any previous night reserved for an early arrival.

Keep international flights in the total holiday budget even when comparing an “in-China” subtotal. Write the currency and conversion date beside each quote. Do not add a per-room amount to a per-person total without allocating it first.

Use this worksheet instead of a universal daily price

ContingencyA deliberate reserveDisruption, changed fares and unplanned purchases

Use a current quote for the actual date and party. A hotel brand does not guarantee a rate or room type; a railway route does not have one permanent fare. Store the cancellation conditions beside the price, because a cheaper restrictive booking can be more expensive when the route changes.

A worked example of units—not a market-price claim

Suppose two adults plan ten itinerary days and nine accommodation nights in one shared room. If their chosen room quote were $100 per night, the room subtotal would be 9 × $100 = $900 for the party, or $450 each when shared equally. This is an illustrative arithmetic example, not a quoted hotel rate or customer case.

The LOCLYX planning fee for ten travel days is 10 × $19.9 = $199.00 before any valid discount. It is separate from the flights, hotels, tickets and food you buy. Add the actual price of each transport leg for both passengers; do not double a party subtotal again.

Ten days, two adults: a complete hypothetical budget

Assumptions: two adults, one shared room, ten itinerary days, nine nights and one intercity rail move. All amounts below are USD. The price bands are chosen inputs to demonstrate the calculation, not researched market averages, current quotes or a customer’s bill. They do not apply automatically to your dates or route.

ItemAssumed unit or basisFor both adults
One shared room × 9 nights$80–120 / room / night$720–1,080
Meals × 2 adults × 10 days$25–40 / person / day$500–800
One intercity rail move × 2 adults$70–110 / person$140–220
Local transport and terminal transfersParty allowance for the whole trip$180–300
Admissions and activities × 2 adults$100–160 / person for the trip$200–320
ConnectivityParty allowance$30–60
Illustrative in-China travel subtotalBefore contingency and planning$1,770–2,780
10% contingency on that subtotalRounded dollar allowance$177–278
Optional LOCLYX digital plan10 itinerary days × $19.9$199
Illustrative total for both adultsTravel + contingency + planning$2,146–3,257

Dividing the party total equally gives $1,073–1,628.50 per adult. International flights, visa or entry costs, insurance, shopping, alcohol and optional premium experiences are excluded; add those separately. The $199 planning fee is charged once for this ten-day itinerary, not once per traveler. A valid discount would change only the applicable checkout charge.

To personalize the worksheet, replace the room and rail inputs first. Then review daily food and admission choices. Keeping the same assumptions, a second intercity move adds another pair of tickets and terminal journeys; it cannot be evaluated by adding only a train’s advertised running time. This calculation shows how to budget, not how much LOCLYX will save every traveler.

Change the route before cutting every meal

Mid-range hotel room in a Chinese-chain hotel in Beijing — clean, modern, $60 per night.

Adding a third city can add an intercity fare, two terminal transfers, another hotel check-in and a shorter sightseeing day. Removing that move may protect both the budget and the experience. Compare two-city and three-city versions in the ten-day itinerary guide.

Hotel location can change the cost of daily transfers; room configuration can change a family’s total more than a headline star rating. Keep one or two activities that matter to you, and cut low-value movement before squeezing every rest period. Do not assume children receive a universal discount.

Check these quotes before committing

Our tax refund guide explains why a potential refund is not guaranteed spending money. For U.S. tourist visa fees, use the responsible embassy or consulate notice rather than an old blog total.

What to send a planner

Street food vendor in a Chinese night market — a typical meal costs $3 to $8, the best food-to-cost ratio in Asia.

State the total budget, whether flights are included, the number and ages of travelers, desired room arrangements, must-see places and walking tolerance. Identify the purchases already made and their change conditions. A planner can explain the tradeoffs; a budget cannot create unavailable tickets or remove provider rules.

Review the sample plan to understand how transport legs and estimated spending are presented. Travel estimates need reconfirmation when you book; the planning service does not purchase travel on your behalf.

Turn this decision into a workable route

A workable budget depends on city order, room sharing and the transport details behind the headline total. LOCLYX is a China-based local team. We tailor a written plan to your dates, budget, interests, pace and constraints. Planning costs $19.9 per travel day; travel purchases are separate and we do not make reservations or provide ground services.

Use the route-planning hub to compare the schedule before finalizing spending. Compare the sample itinerary and pricing and scope before using Plan My Trip. Delivery and revision conditions are in the published policy.
