Choose connectivity by what you need it to do. Mobile data, receiving bank verification messages and having a local voice number are different requirements. No single plan is best for every phone, itinerary or traveler.
Compare the three routes

Do not assume that a travel eSIM provides a +86 number or that every physical SIM supports your handset. Product features vary within the same brand. Check the current plan rather than relying on an old vendor price ladder.
Check the exact phone, not only its model family
Look up your specific model and sales region, whether eSIM is supported, whether it is unlocked, and how many lines can remain active. A broad claim that every recent iPhone or Samsung supports the same features can be wrong for a regional variant.
Keep the home line available if it is your banking or account verification method, but review its roaming charges. Selecting a travel line for mobile data does not automatically prevent the other line from incurring voice, SMS or data charges. Follow the device and carrier instructions.
Ask how the plan behaves in mainland China
Connectivity and service access depend on routing, provider, coverage and the particular service. Some roaming/travel products route traffic differently from a mainland local connection. Do not infer that every eSIM unblocks every app or that any VPN is guaranteed to work.
Ask the provider about the services you depend on and keep downloaded records. Use the map choice guide for navigation rather than assuming data alone makes your familiar maps usable. Check the applicable laws and provider terms.
Separate installation from activation
Buy and install only through the provider’s documented process on a reliable connection. Confirm what starts the validity period: installation, manual activation, first network connection or another condition. Save the support and order details; do not delete a profile while troubleshooting without knowing whether it can be reinstalled.
At arrival, select the intended data line and use data roaming only as instructed for that product. Keep auto-switching and the home-line settings under control. If it fails, use official support rather than repeatedly buying another plan before checking compatibility and settings.
If choosing a local SIM, leave room for the counter
Use an authorized provider and bring the original identification it requires. Do not assume every airport has a staffed counter open at your landing time, takes every foreign card or sells the same package. Confirm the price, validity, data, voice/SMS, renewal and cancellation terms before agreeing.
A data-only plan is not a voice service: unused data does not establish that you can make an emergency voice call. Keep a practical way to ask staff to call for help and use the emergency numbers guide.

- Exact phone model, region and lock checked.
- Mainland China included for all trip dates.
- Enough data and any fair-use/throttling terms understood.
- SMS/voice and home-bank authentication handled separately.
- Activation, hotspot and reinstall conditions understood.
- Support/refund channel saved and an arrival alternative prepared.
