Do not make Google Maps your only navigation plan for mainland China. Service access and local route information may be limited; prepare a tool that finds your actual hotel, station and destinations on the device you will bring.
Separate network access from useful map information
An app opening is not proof that its route, business listing or entrance information is current. A roaming plan may change service access without fixing incomplete local data. Conversely, a local map may find the address but present instructions in a language you cannot comfortably use.
Check the particular hotel branch, station and visitor entrance against the provider’s confirmation. A single claimed map offset or accuracy percentage cannot establish that every address and route will work on your device.

Do not assume that every version of a local map is Chinese-only or that all functions are available in every store region. App features evolve. Use the official store entry for the current product.
Confirm the place before trusting the route
Hotels can share an English brand name across several branches. Railway stations and airports can be far apart even when they serve the same city. Match the Chinese address and booking to the search result, then identify the entrance or pickup point you actually need.
A driver needs the right destination, not a generic English city label. Prepare the hotel address card and check the station named on the rail ticket. Use the metro first-ride guide for ticket and exit details.
Make a fallback you can read
Save the destination address, relevant names, a route summary and your booking reference. A screenshot is useful context, but can be stale and is not a live turn-by-turn route. Do not assume offline Google Maps provides all the features or mainland coverage you need.
If lost, stop in a safe public place and verify the destination with appropriate staff. Do not keep walking toward a doubtful pin while trying to solve account setup. A practical taxi/public-transport alternative can be more useful than a second unfamiliar navigation interface.
Save a bilingual destination card: Chengdu Museum example
Here is a real public destination, not a hotel or pickup guarantee. Chengdu Museum’s own visitor guide lists No. 1 Xiaohe Street, Qingyang District, on the west side of Tianfu Square. Search by both the venue name and address; the right building pin still needs the visitor entrance checked.

For your hotel, replace every field with the exact branch information from its confirmation. Save the card as readable text and a screenshot before departure. If the map stops loading, staff can read the Chinese destination; the saved card itself provides no live directions. Google’s offline-map help explicitly excludes offline public-transit, cycling and walking directions, so an offline download is not a complete walking or metro plan. Museum address source.
Maps belong in the arrival and transfer plan
Connectivity, battery, payments and route information are separate dependencies. Carry an appropriate charged power bank that meets your transport rules, retain a non-phone payment backup and keep your first-night details accessible.
