What to Pack for China in Summer: A Realistic List (From Someone Who Lives Here)

GUIDES / JOURNALS 2026

TL;DR: Skip the travel-size toiletries and the money belt. Pack light, pack smart, and leave room for the stuff you’ll buy here. Here’s what you actually need for a summer trip to China — not a generic packing list from a travel blog that’s never been here.

Every “what to pack for China” article I’ve read was written by someone who visited for a week and packed like they were going to the moon. You don’t need half that stuff. You do need a few things nobody mentions. Here’s the real list.

Summer street scene in a small Chinese city — tree-lined lane, dappled sunlight, a local walking with a parasol
China in summer is hot, humid, and beautiful. Pack for the reality — not the Instagram version.

The One Thing Nobody Tells You

China in summer is hot. Not “oh it’s warm” hot — humid, sticky, 35°C with 80% humidity hot. Beijing in July feels like standing inside someone’s mouth. Shanghai in August is worse. Guangzhou is a tropical steam bath.

You will sweat through your shirt by 10am. You will shower twice a day. You will be grateful for every gram you didn’t pack. This isn’t a fashion trip. This is a survival trip.

Pack light. Two outfits max. You’ll do laundry in your hotel sink. It dries in three hours in this humidity.

Clothes

The Stuff Nobody Mentions

Electronics

Half-empty suitcase with essentials — sneakers, two t-shirts, toiletries, power bank, passport — leaving room for shopping
Leave 30% of your suitcase empty. You will buy things here — tea, silk, snacks from markets. Every friend I know leaves China with an extra bag.
