Lost Your U.S. Passport in China: What to Do Next

GUIDES / JOURNALS 2026

A replacement passport and permission to leave China are separate questions. Contact local police, the current U.S. consular service and Chinese exit-entry authorities promptly; do not book a same-day departure on an assumed emergency-document timeline.

First: get safe and collect the facts

If there is danger or suspected theft, call 110 or get help at a staffed police/hotel location. If the passport may be at the hotel or in transport, contact that provider promptly, but do not wait a fixed 24–48 hours before seeking official advice.

Gather your name, passport number if available, location, entry details, last known possession, contact method and next booked travel. Keep supporting copies securely. A photocopy can help establish the situation; it does not replace the missing original for travel.

Ask police which loss record is required

Report the loss to the local police and ask what record and follow-up are required in your case. Keep a copy, photograph and reference number where provided. The process, document name, timing and available language support may differ by location.

Ask hotel staff or a trusted interpreter to help with communication, without giving them account passwords or unrelated private records. If travel is imminent, tell the authorities the booked dates.

Use the current U.S. consular contact directory

Use the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in China’s official website or the State Department’s country information to locate the current service for your location. Do not use an old list that treats the former Chengdu consulate as an operating passport service.

Ask about appointments, evidence of identity, passport photographs, application/report forms, fees and the document appropriate to your onward itinerary. Processing time and fees are determined by the consular service; emergency replacement is not automatically free or issued by the next morning.

Contact Chinese exit-entry authorities separately

Tell the local exit-entry administration that the original passport/entry record was lost and explain the replacement document and departure plan. Ask which confirmation, visa or other exit procedure is required and how long it may take.

A new passport does not automatically restore the lost visa or establish the Chinese exit process. Check the airline and any transit/destination authority before relying on an emergency passport for an international connection.

Protect the remaining bookings

Inform the hotel and booking providers. Passenger details may need updating, and a missing passport can affect domestic rail, hotel registration and flight check-in as well as the flight home. Ask the official provider what document it accepts; do not assume its normal temporary-ID process applies to a U.S. visitor.

Contact the insurer with the incident and booking details. Keep receipts and reference numbers, and ask before making discretionary replacement purchases. Coverage and reimbursement are policy-specific.

Do not travel until these questions are answered

Before a future trip

Keep a secure passport/entry-document backup separate from the original and a contact method that survives losing your phone. U.S. travelers can consider the State Department’s STEP service for official alerts and contact information. Registration is not a guarantee of faster replacement or emergency rescue.

Read the passport-carrying guide and the lost-phone guide to keep the backups consistent. Do not publicly upload identity documents as evidence of a travel story.

Prepare other practical backups with the China safety preparation guide.

Turn this decision into a workable route

A well-prepared route includes document backups and flexible logistics, but passport recovery remains an official consular and immigration process. LOCLYX is a China-based local team. We tailor a written plan to your dates, budget, interests, pace and constraints. Planning costs $19.9 per travel day; travel purchases are separate and we do not make reservations or provide ground services.

Use the emergency contact card before departure. Compare the sample itinerary and pricing and scope before using Plan My Trip. Delivery and revision conditions are in the published policy.
