Short answer: A China train ticket change after departure may still be possible if your ticket remains eligible and another train has availability. Act before 24:00 on the original travel date. A change to another train that same day has no railway change fee; a change to a later date carries a fee of 40% of the lower of the original and new ticket fares. Fare differences and other applicable charges are separate.
Evidence checked: October 6, 2026. This guide covers an ordinary mainland China railway ticket you did not use because you missed the booked train. Cross-border services, special products and railway-caused disruption need their own checks. The rule below is not permission to board another train with your old ticket.
Check the order before buying a second journey
| Situation | Useful next step | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Just missed departure | Use the current railway or original-channel change workflow. | The old ticket does not permit boarding an arbitrary next train. |
| Replacement is offered | Review timing, fare difference and any fee before accepting. | A change rule does not guarantee available seats. |
| No useful train remains | Compare a route-preserving alternative and notify the next hotel. | A railway exception is not an automatic refund for lateness. |
Key Takeaways
- Open the original order immediately and check whether it can still be changed.
- The deadline for a post-departure change is tied to the original travel date, not the departure date of your replacement train.
- Same-day and next-day changes have different railway change-fee rules.
- A ticket can normally be changed only once, and another train must have availability.
- A missed departure does not automatically qualify for an ordinary refund.
- After changing, verify the new train, date, stations and seat in the confirmed ticket record.
What should you do first if you miss your train in China?
Find the original ticket and ask about a change before buying a replacement. Move to a safe public area, open the order in the service you used, and keep the original booking passport available. If the online route is unclear, ask an official station ticket counter or railway staff for help.
- Confirm the booked train, scheduled departure, travel date and exact station.
- Check whether the order is an issued ticket, whether it has already been changed, and which actions are available.
- Compare a workable same-day departure with a later-date option.
- Read the fee breakdown and confirm the change before treating the replacement as booked.
If boarding has closed but the scheduled departure has not yet passed, say that clearly: your case may still fall under pre-departure rules. Do not wait for the train to leave just to fit this guide. For identity and ticket-record preparation, see our 12306 guide for foreign-passport travelers.
Can you change a China train ticket after departure?
Yes, an eligible unused ticket can be changed after departure, subject to availability and the applicable deadline. China Railway’s official announcement on expanded ticket changes allows a post-departure change to a later travel date within the advance-sale period when handled before 24:00 on the original travel date. Its English FAQ also explains same-day changes and the fee structure.
Keep two dates separate: when you must process the change and when the replacement train leaves. Being allowed to choose tomorrow’s train does not mean you can leave the original ticket untouched until tomorrow. Website operating hours or booking-channel deadlines can also constrain the practical route, so act promptly.
What is the difference between same-day and next-day changes?
The railway change fee depends on the replacement travel date. For an eligible post-departure change, another train on the original date has no railway change fee. A train on the next day or a later date incurs 40% of the lower of the two fares. Both options still require available capacity.
| After your booked train departs | Railway change fee | What still needs checking |
|---|---|---|
| Change to another train on the original travel date | No railway change fee | Availability, ticket eligibility, fare difference and any other applicable charges |
| Change to a train on the next day or later | 40% of the lower of the original and new ticket fares | Process before 24:00 on the original date; replacement must be within the advance-sale period |
| The ticket has already been changed once | Do not assume another change is available | The official FAQ permits only one change; ask about the actual record |
| The original travel date has ended | Do not assume the normal post-departure change remains available | Ask the railway about the record and any applicable exceptional handling |
No change fee does not mean no extra payment. If the replacement costs more, a fare difference can apply. If it costs less, the handling of the difference may involve a deduction under the railway’s rules. A third-party platform may also have separately disclosed service charges. Read the complete breakdown rather than one headline amount.
How does the deadline work? A dated example
Use the date and time on the original ticket. Suppose your unused train was scheduled to depart at 3:00 p.m. on October 10. At 3:20 p.m. that day, you discover you missed it. The following examples illustrate the rules, not actual departures or seat availability.
- Another train on October 10: a permitted same-day change has no railway change fee, but fare adjustments may apply.
- A train on October 11: a permitted change incurs the 40% fee and must be processed before 24:00 on October 10.
- Opening the unchanged order on October 11: do not assume yesterday’s post-departure change window is still open.
For a simple next-day illustration, an original fare of RMB 100 and a new fare of RMB 120 produce a RMB 40 change fee, based on the lower fare, plus a RMB 20 fare increase: RMB 60 combined. These are hypothetical fares, not a live quote, and exclude any separately applicable platform charges. Check the amount displayed for your own order.

What if you booked through Trip.com or another platform?
Start with the original issuing channel, but distinguish its workflow from railway eligibility. Open that order and ask whether it can process a post-departure change, what deadline applies to its service, and which charges are railway charges versus platform charges.
Do not assume a third-party order automatically appears in your own 12306 account or can be changed there. If the platform cannot complete the action and time is running out, show the order and original passport to an official station counter and ask what can be done for that ticket. This guide does not verify every platform’s current interface or promise that a counter can resolve every order.
After any change, check the confirmed replacement ticket rather than relying on a request-submitted message or payment alert. Review each passenger if several people are traveling; one person’s completed change is not confirmation for everyone.
Can you get a refund instead of changing a missed train?
Do not assume an ordinary refund remains available after departure. The 12306 English login notice states that ordinary refunds should be processed no later than departure. The official FAQ also says tickets changed after departure cannot be refunded.
Exceptional cases and railway responsibility have separate handling. The FAQ describes special-case refund handling requiring station approval and arrangements when the railway is responsible for a passenger being unable to take the booked service. These are not a guaranteed refund for arriving late. Explain the facts to railway staff instead of choosing an exception yourself.
If you miss a separately booked connection because your first train is delayed, show both ticket records and ask how your particular case is handled. Do not assume automatic protection. Our same-station versus different-station transfer guide covers the connection-planning problem.
What if all useful replacement trains are sold out?
A change rule does not create a seat. Ask about other departures or classes that preserve your route, then compare the total cost and arrival time. A different station may require a city transfer; a next-day train may require another hotel night.
If no suitable replacement is available, use our China train sold-out recovery guide for alternatives. Do not treat a waitlist as an issued replacement, and do not let an unconfirmed request distract you from the original ticket’s deadline. Notify your next hotel or other provider if your plans change.
What should you ask railway staff?
Ask about the actual ticket before asking for a particular outcome. Show the original order privately and keep your passport ready. You can use this English message with a translation tool:
I missed the train on this ticket. Has it already been changed, and is it still eligible for a change? Could you check an available train today and an option tomorrow? Please explain the fare difference, change fee and deadline before I confirm.
Do not post passport numbers, full ticket screenshots or payment details in public groups. For pre-departure preparation, the LOCLYX travel resources page offers free guides available after registration. It is a preparation resource, not a railway rebooking service.
Frequently asked questions
Can I board the next train with my missed train ticket?
Do not treat the original ticket as permission to board another service. Complete the applicable change or obtain a valid replacement ticket, then follow station staff instructions and the confirmed record.
Is changing to a later train on the same day completely free?
There is no railway change fee for an eligible post-departure same-day change. Fare differences, deductions when a lower fare applies, and separately disclosed platform charges can still affect the amount.
Can I change to tomorrow’s train tomorrow morning?
Do not wait. The normal post-departure window ends on the original travel date. A later-date replacement must be selected and the change processed within the applicable window, subject to availability and channel access.
What if I have already changed the ticket?
The official FAQ permits a ticket change only once. Ask the issuing channel or railway staff about the current record; do not assume another change or a post-departure refund is available.
Build a route with room for recovery
If a missed departure changes the day, first confirm a valid replacement journey and your hotel arrival arrangements. Recheck the next fixed booking before adding sightseeing. A planning buffer reduces the consequences of a disruption; it does not guarantee ticket availability.
